What got you interested in this career?
I’ve been working at JP Marshall for about three years now, and before this I studied for two years doing a Bachelor of Engineering. However, I soon realised that I prefer the more hands-on work. I started at Marshall Profiling as a laser operator and now here I am.
What have you learnt on the job?
How to problem solve on a day-to-day basis, and how to work in a team-based environment.
What sort of person do you need to be for this type of work?
You’ve got to be hands-on, willing to learn and ready to soak everything up like a sponge!
What advice would you give someone deciding on their career?
Give it a lot of thought before committing to anything long term or serious. Don’t jump into study if you’re not sure about it. You have plenty of time.
What challenges have you had to overcome?
Getting used to the industry was probably the biggest challenge to start with. Adjusting to working on the practical side of things instead of everything being computer and theory based.
What do you like most about working at JP Marshall?
It’s a real family-based environment and everyone gets along. I also really enjoy the variety of work that we produce.
What does someone need to know when starting out at work?
Show up on time and be ready to learn!
Where would you like to go with your career?
I’d like to gain a broader understanding of the industry and to have a good overview and understanding of what I’m doing and how the industry works.
