Waikato’s tourism sector is thriving with a wide range of attractions and experiences to suit visitors from around New Zealand and the world.
Our region is home to world-class gardens, popular surf beaches, the iconic Hobbiton movie set, an array of hiking and mountain biking trails and growing events centres like the Globox Arena and soon-to-be Waikato Regional Theatre.
“The most important skill right now is adaptability, especially in our ever-changing environment. Domestic tourism is growing, and Waikato is well-placed to take advantage of this, with 2.8 million people living within a three-hour drive of Hamilton.”
– Jason Dawson, Hamilton & Waikato Tourism Chief Executive
Job prospects for hospitality workers are good. Opportunities are expected to increase as the global economy strengthens and tourism increases. High job turnover also contributes to making it easier for new workers to enter this occupation. Income is below average, but that reflects the high proportion in the industry who work part-time (mbie.org.nz).
